The series closes with Peter’s call to lay down his life for the sheep, an extension of Christ’s own continuing ministry, including its ministry of judgment. Throughout John 6, Christ has been pushing his hearers past bread, flesh, and blood, to the Spirit and to heaven itself.
Only God can bring order out of chaos, a point repeated here while tracing the Holy Spirit as the downpayment of our inheritance in Romans 8. The transforming power already at work in Genesis 1:2 is nothing less than the coming of the age of the Spirit.
Opening the series, God is shown submitting himself to his own creation, sharing our experience of time and earth. The formlessness of Genesis 1:2 is remedied by the Holy Spirit himself, given as a downpayment to the church in Christ.
Elisha’s circuit back to Gilgal recalls the double portion of the Spirit promised in chapter 2, with two competing readings of the strange famine story that follows worked through in turn. Whatever the details, the point stands the same: only the Spirit gives life.
