God is driven, in effect, to shout at a people gone deaf in their own self-pity, unable to hear comfort offered plainly. Abraham and Sarah, and the garden imagery of verse 3, anchor the promise in real historical precedent rather than wishful thinking. What waits at the end of that promise is nothing less than the perpetual melody of heaven.
