Colossians 3:1-2’s call to set the mind on things above governs the OPC’s forced name change in 1939, when the new denomination called itself ‘Orthodox’ in place of simply American. Dropping ‘in America’ from its name confessed which city the church belongs to. God’s own sovereignty confirmed that choice, more than the denomination’s survival did.
