The series closes in Paul’s epistles, tracing the same true gospel already seen in Christ’s own words, measured against Machen’s classic definition. Against the modern liberal view of Paul, Jesus and Paul turn out to preach one and the same gospel, however far the church has since wandered from it.
John the Baptist expected Christ to bring immediate judgment along with blessing. Leaning on J. Gresham Machen’s defense of the true gospel, Christ’s blessings are shown to exceed even Isaiah’s prophecy, and, crucially, to come before judgment rather than after it.
A direct line runs from the PCUSA’s abandonment of church discipline, and even Machen’s own failure to discipline, back to the order already structured into Genesis 4. Discipline is a biblical concern the OPC cannot afford to treat lightly.
