The series closes in Paul’s epistles, tracing the same true gospel already seen in Christ’s own words, measured against Machen’s classic definition. Against the modern liberal view of Paul, Jesus and Paul turn out to preach one and the same gospel, however far the church has since wandered from it.
The church’s struggle between grace and works righteousness is not a new problem liberalism invented; it runs straight back through Hebrews to Habakkuk himself. God brings Habakkuk to the end of his own resources before he can receive grace rightly. Passages that seem to teach works righteousness resolve the same way Hebrews 11’s whole account of faith does: by fixing attention on what is unseen.
A borrowed axe head sinking in the Jordan sets up a direct challenge to liberal commentators who explain away Scripture’s miracles. Robinson’s approach comes in for direct criticism, and the plain claim stands: biblical miracles are supernatural, not embarrassments to be managed.
