Dennison surveys the covenant’s importance across Scripture, from 1 Samuel 18 and John 13 to Hosea and Revelation, to show how the law itself exists to serve the covenant rather than stand above it. Its goal, he argues, is nothing less than our promised inheritance.
The series closes with Dennison facing the sheer strangeness of God commanding what amounts to a pagan ritual and abomination: child sacrifice. The story’s purpose, he argues, is to push us past the law itself to the truth beneath it. Our bond with God is finally rooted in his love, not merely his commands.
Paul says love ‘does not act unbecomingly,’ and Dennison grounds that claim not in mere manners but in the person of Christ. The law can command obedience, he argues, but it can never produce it. Only the gospel of Christ’s liberty frees us to truly love.
