Jacob wrestles at Peniel with a man who turns out to be God himself, receiving a new name only after the struggle nearly breaks him. Faith, for Jacob as for Habakkuk, gets perfected in the night, not in comfortable daylight certainty. Christ stands as both the perfect object of that faith and the one who perfects it in us.
