Christ’s reading of Isaiah 61 in the Nazareth synagogue is anything but neutral quotation; he deliberately adds to and subtracts from the prophecy as he reads it, and the sermon insists that editing is itself infallible exegesis rather than error. The coming of the Spirit is what authorizes that kind of reading. The congregation’s furious reaction shows they understood exactly what he had just claimed.
