Even in Jesus’s year of popularity, his use of Isaiah 42 provokes the Pharisees. Matthew 12:31-32 makes the stakes explicit: where Christ is, the Spirit and the kingdom have arrived in their finality. Popularity and confrontation belong to the same ministry.
Christ reads Isaiah 61 in the Nazareth synagogue and deliberately adds to and subtracts from the prophecy as he reads, and that editing is infallible exegesis. The coming of the Spirit authorizes that kind of reading. The congregation’s fury shows they understood exactly what he claimed.
