Christ’s own baptism carries a wealth of meaning the church too easily reduces to a single idea, drawing together Matthew 3:16, Colossians 2:9, 2 Corinthians 3, and Acts 2:38 into one argument. What Christ receives at the Jordan, his people receive as well: the Spirit himself as the actual reward. Already and not-yet both belong to that one baptism.
