Elizabeth is Israel in her glory and her shame at once. Luke 1:39-56 moves in four stages: Mary’s journey, her reception, her song, and her service to Elizabeth. In Mary’s song the New Testament overtakes the Old.
Throughout Luke, Christ blesses women with a new liberty and dignity. The New Testament uses women to teach about Christ, and Elizabeth and Mary show how. When Mary greets her, the child in Elizabeth’s womb leaps for joy.
Luke 1:26-56 falls into four divisions, from Gabriel’s announcement to Mary’s song. Mary and Elizabeth meet, and the old covenant greets the new. The law serves the gospel.
Elizabeth’s barrenness ends in conception, and the ‘oath’ God swore to Abraham stands behind it. Zacharias, the priest, shows the law blessing the new order that comes in Christ. Luke 1:80 closes on the child growing strong in spirit, and God’s people rejoice in his work.
