Christ forgives the paralytic’s sins before he heals his body, and that order is the point, since pardon comes before any cure. Christ’s word of forgiveness costs him condescension and humiliation, foreshadowed in Psalm 103 and promised in Jeremiah’s new covenant. True faith rests in that forgiveness more than in the miracle that follows.
