Sermons on Ezekiel
Five Old Testament texts on the Spirit, from Psalm 51 to Ezekiel’s valley of dry bones, are drawn together and read against Ephesians 2:19-22’s picture of a temple built from living stones. The New Testament’s fullness of the Spirit can make his Old Testament ministry look almost non-existent by comparison, but the sermon insists that impression is misleading. Ezekiel’s bones and Paul’s temple are describing the same Spirit.
Ezekiel’s valley of dry bones becomes the text for weighing the modern Pentecostal understanding of the Holy Spirit against the teaching of Kuyper, Vos, and Gaffin. Irresistible grace is the Spirit’s work of uniting us to Christ, not mere religious excitement.
